There have been reports and claims of paranormal activity at Marine Tavern in Broad Street, Brighton. The pub has a reputation for being haunted, with various alleged ghostly encounters and experiences reported by staff and visitors.
One of the most commonly reported paranormal phenomena at Marine Tavern is the presence of a ghostly figure known as "Percy." According to accounts, Percy is said to be a former landlord or regular patron of the pub who passed away many years ago. Witnesses have described seeing a shadowy figure resembling a man dressed in old-fashioned clothing, often lingering near the bar area or moving through the building.
Other paranormal experiences reported at The Marine Tavern include unexplained cold spots, objects moving or being displaced without apparent cause, and the sensation of being watched or touched by unseen entities.
Adrian J. Andrews, Paranormal Investigator, performed a ghost hunt in The Marine Tavern. His team quickly identified that there was a lady down in the cellar and that her body was behind the bricks in an old underground tunnel. As he called out to this particular corner of the cellar there was a colossal bang and a knocking from that corner.
There is a series of underground tunnels that run through Brighton, which are believed to be smuggler's tunnels. The body of the lady mentioned above is believed to have been trapped in one of these tunnels that previously used to be accessible from Marine Tavern's cellar, but this has since been bricked up.
Adrian also mentioned to a previous landlord, Lee Cockshott, that a lady in a green dress haunts the Marine Tavern, but it has never been confirmed if this the same lady that had been identified in the cellar.
Other experiences that have been reported include bar stock being moved through the night in the most unusual of places including a can of Red Bull being placed in the ice maker when the premises was closed.
Knocking from inside the locked cellar is a common occurrence and this has been spoken about for many years by a multitude of customers and staff.
Another spirit that has been seen over the years is a woman in a long yellow Victorian dress pass through the bar. Again, this is something that many people have referenced and leaves customers with a chilling sensation.
More recently, loud footsteps have been heard throughout the building, particularly in the stairwell leading to the toilets from the bar. This eventuality has been reported to also be followed a brief laughter. The footsteps were heard when no other person was in the Marine Tavern due to the venue shutting for the night, but they were unmistakably coming from within bar.
It's worth noting that these claims of paranormal activity are based on personal accounts and individual experiences, and there is no scientific evidence to support the existence of ghosts or hauntings. However, for those interested in the supernatural, The Marine Tavern in Broad Street, Brighton, has gained a reputation as a place with potential ghostly encounters.
